WELCOME! to the ARF House, the little rescue with the big heart, home of love and second chances.
We are located in the mountain village of Idyllwild, CA where we have been serving the community since 1994. A volunteer, grassroots, non-profit organization, ARF’s mission is to rescue animals that have been abandoned, lost, or whose owners are no longer able to care for them. We provide foster care until forever homes are located. Our animals are spay/neutered, receive necessary shots and other veterinary care as needed.
Each year, relying only on the generosity of donors and small grants, ARF helps an increasing number of dogs and cats, turning sad stories into happy tails. In 2016 we adopted out 31 dogs and 38 cats. We've also assisted with nearly 60 Lost/Found dogs and cats helping them to find their way back home.
ARF works to educate our population about the importance of responsible pet ownership, including the need for spay/neuter and heart worm disease prevention.
Please won’t you join us in our efforts to improve the welfare of our loyal companions? Spend a little time to look around our website, visit the dogs and cats available for adoption, and find out how you can become involved. It has been said that a society is judged by how it treats the "least" of its members. They bring so much joy while asking so little in return. They depend on us…on you.

10 Tips for Facing Pet Loss through the Holidays…
"10 Tips for Facing Pet Loss through the Holidays”
By: Anna McClain PGSS-C
No words can describe the deep pain and heartbreak we experience when losing our beloved pet and cherished friend, especially with the holiday season upon us.
Whether our loss is recent or long ago, this time of year can carry additional pressures that weigh heavily on us physically and emotionally.
Here are 10 comforting tips:
1. What is best for you? Ask yourself valuable questions of your comfort level about various holiday events. Helpful questions include “What holiday activities do I feel comfortable participating in (or missing) this year?” and “How would I like to honor my best friend?”
2. Breathe: Deep breathing can help soothe your heart during overwhelming moments. Take a relaxed breath (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale for 4 seconds) and try to coordinate these breaths with special words (love, peace, your pet’s name).
3. Take care of yourself- heart, body, and soul. If an activity becomes too difficult (decorating at home, shopping, social gathering), please give yourself permission to do what is best for YOU, even if you need to leave early.
4. Focus on your needs: It is not selfish to decline or delay an activity and gently say “Thank you. I appreciate the invite and our friendship, but not right now.”
5. Plan ahead: Ask a loving friend or family to attend holiday events with you for support. Set up a back-up plan if you need to leave early and place a special token of your pet in your pocket (heart stone, toy, picture) for comfort.
6. Communication: Talk with your family about changing the location/time/date of a holiday event - texting or email may be easier for this conversation.
7. Travel: Consider traveling during this time of year for a change of scenery and a special way to honor your pet.
8. Honor: Holding a special dinner or candlelight memorial to share stories or even spending time remembering them is so peaceful.
9. You can also make a personalized ornament, holiday decoration (sewing wings onto their stocking), or a memory tree (placing their stocking on top of the tree- our angels!).
10. Support system: Reaching out to your friends/family and having resources for support groups is comforting.
Facing pet loss is deeply devastating, especially during the craze of the holiday season. It is always okay to do what is best for your needs and seek support anytime.
You are never alone and are so loved.

LIABILITY AND LOOSE DOGS (PETS)
We frequently get calls for dogs wandering about our communities, often on our busy highways. When contacted, the dog’s guardian many times tells us that a) the dogs always comes home and/or b) the dog doesn’t bother anyone. What the guardian needs to know is his loose dog is a serious liability. The dog may easily cause a traffic collision in addition to possibly biting/injuring a person or another animal.
In California, in accidents involving pet or livestock, the State usually finds the owners liable for failing to adequately leash, enclose, or otherwise restrain their animals. The pet or livestock owner is personally liable to pay for injuries and damages (unless his/her homeowner’s insurance will
cover the damage costs).
